An Evening with Author Michael Perry

We are excited to announce that author and humorist Michael Perry will be visiting the Boyceville Public Library on April 22nd.

Michael Perry is a New York Times bestselling author, humorist, corporate speaker, volunteer firefighter/first responder, and amateur snowplow driver. A lifelong resident of the rural Midwest, his “reflective roughneck” takes on life in Middle America have left hundreds of thousands of readers and live audiences laughing, nodding, and sometimes misty.1

Public Library Building Presentation

Valentine Schute from River Architects will be presenting new building plans for the Boyceville Public Library (date TBA). There will be an opportunity to ask Mr. Schute questions and offer feedback after the presentation, and coffee and light refreshments will be served. We hope you will join us to discuss the possibilities for our future library home!

National Poetry Month Events

Spark or deepen your appreciation for poetry this month at the library. Events include a poetry recitation contest, a poetry writing contest, a poetry reading night, and, during poetry week, supplies will be available for creating blackout poetry. See the calendar of events below for details.

We’re grateful to receive a $546.60 grant from the Arlien W. Carlson Library Legacy Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation of Dunn County. This funding supports our summer reading program and helps us continue serving our community.

Blackout poetry is composed by eliminating—or blacking out—words from an existing text (a page from a magazine, newspaper, etc.) and forming a poem from the remaining words. Take your finished blackout poetry home or let us add it to our library display for everyone to enjoy.

Celebrating National Read-Aloud Month

March is National Read-Aloud Month! We already have a year-long reading challenge for big kids, teens, and adults, so during March we are having a special reading challenge just for the read-to-me set (details below). We will also be sharing themed reading lists to help you find the best books to enjoy together, as well as picture book recommendations during March on our Facebook page.

But just because we are focusing on little ones this month does not mean that reading aloud is a pleasure reserved only for the very young; reading a book with a friend or family member (or the whole family) is enjoyable at any age. Did you know that many of Charles Dickens’ books were first published serially in the newspaper? Families would eagerly await each installment—then read it aloud together. Modern life may afford us a wider range of entertainment than was available during Dickens’ time, but sometimes you just can’t beat the shared experience of reading a good book together. Try it this month!

The first full moon in March is known as the worm moon because it coincides with the emergence of the earthworms from the thawing ground.

Check the reading challenge book lists, and next time you’re in the library have a look at the display frame in the hallway showcasing participants’ book selections.
